2011 Halloween Costume Contest!

We want you to be a part of our very first Costume Bot Halloween costume contest!  All you have to do is send us a picture of yourself in costume holding a printout of our Costume Bot mascot.  That’s pretty much it.  Just follow these instructions:

1. Download and print out THIS IMAGE of the Costume bot mascot.

2.  Take a picture of yourself in your costume holding the printout of the Costume bot.

3.  Email your picture to costumebot@gmail.com with “2011 Costume Contest” as the subject line.  And be sure to include the following (cut and paste this in):  ”I, YOUR NAME HERE,  grant permission for my photo to be used by costumebot.com under the terms of the Creative Commons License. This means that although I retain the copyright and authorship of my own work, I am granting permission for costumebot.com to use my photo freely.”  If photo subject is under 18, the email must come from a guardian over the age of 18 and include the following line: “I am the parent/legal guardian of the individual in the attached photograph and I have read this release and approve of its terms.”

4.  Deadline for entry is November 10, 2011.

5.  Winners will be announced after being contacted in reference to their choice of prize packs.  There will be three winners over 18 and three winners under 18.  Winners under the age of 18 must secure parental consent prior to entry or they will be disqualified.  Winners under the age of 18 must be able to send in an adult guardian’s delivery address (preferably a work address) to receive their prize.  Remember, you should never give out your home address or phone number to anyone you don’t know.  Not even me.

6.  The contest is for US residents only.  I apologize to you other folks, but I can only afford US postage.  If you have someone in the US who’d be willing to receive your prize for you, I’d consider your entry valid.  Just note that fact when you send me your entry.

7.  Prize packs will be shipped by November 30, 2011.

8.  PRIZES: (always an important category).  There are six prize packs as shown below in no particular order.  First place winners will get first choice, with subsequent places picking from the remaining choices.

Prize Pack Number 1:  Retail Value – $100.00

Prize Pack Number 2:  Retail Value – $85.00

Prize Pack Number 3:  Making of Sith & Ep I Portfolio – Retail Value – $76.95

Prize Pack Number 4:  Magic of Myth & Technical Journal (OOP) – Retail Value – $59.95

Prize Pack Number 5:  Star Wars Comic Compendiums – Retail Value – $43.85

Prize Pack Number 6:  Star Wars Tales Comics – Retail Value – $119.70

Yes, the prizes are all Star Wars books, and some pretty pricey ones at that, but that doesn’t mean this is a Star Wars-centric contest.  You may enter with ANY Halloween costume.  I just happened to have a big batch of Star Wars books available for the contest, that’s all.

I should also mention that I will in no way share any information about you, including your email address, grooming habits, and fine dining preferences.  Thanks for taking the time to enter the contest.  Good Luck, everyone!

John Marston Costume from Red Dead Redemption

John Marston rocks in Red Dead Redemption, so I put together a costume based on his fresh-off-the-train look.  Of course, you can unlock lots of other costumes for John in the game, but for my money, this one is the best…the one you think of when you think of Marston.  Depending on the content of the upcoming Undead Nightmare pack, I might have to turn John into a zombie!  :)  Whichever version of Marston you choose, IMHO there’s not a cooler Halloween costume this season.

The Old Electrobinoculars Tutorial is BACK!

Way back when, I made a do-it-yourself tutorial for Star Wars Electrobinoculars that I hosted on my other site, freakengine.com. Since then, I’ve turned FE into a movie review site and haven’t had this tutorial posted anywhere. Well, what better place than costumebot?  Check it out HERE.

I was a Tusken Raider in an Official Lucasfilm Promo Spot

Yeah, it doesn’t sound quite as good as “I was a teenage werewolf” but it was a lot of fun.  A short while back cable network Spike TV had the exclusive rights to air the Star Wars saga.  They came up with some great promotional ideas too.  Maybe you saw some of the billboards and bus ads.  My fave was the one that had an image of armored vader (I hate that I have to specify ARMORED there) with the caption “A guy can only be called ‘Annie’ so many times before he snaps.”  Awesome.

They also made a series of four television ads.  There was Vader playing golf, an angry Ewok in the park, Boba Fett at a business conference, and this one, Tusken Raiders at the office.

Out of the four spots, the Boba and the Tuskens were played by 501st members, myself included.  I’m the main Tusken getting chewed out in the spot.  Lucasfilm contacted our 501st garrison asking for these particular costumes and I answered the call.  There was an approval process with them and we were on our way.  The date for the shoot jumped around a bit as these things are want to do but I was able to wrangle my schedule to be a part of it.

The Tusken shoot was short but Boba really got a long workout.  His day was quite lengthy.  The best part happened when crew members started pulling out cameras and asking for photos with all of us.  Pretty soon it was as busy as any 501st trooping event!

I’ve since modified my prequel Tusken costume a bit but I’m proud to have this version recorded for posterity.

Quick, Cool & Cheap Halloween Costume – Dead Star Trek Red Shirt

Star Trek came back into our lives this year for better or worse.  The great thing is that it makes this a really cool Halloween costume.  I’ve chosen one of the lesser known characters for this tutorial – the doomed red shirt.  You know the ones.  Every time a crewman you’ve never seen before beams down to a planet wearing a red shirt his end is near.  It’s as inevitable as death and taxes.  Okay, okay, I guess it IS death I’m talking about here and what better way to goth up Trek for Halloween?

There aren’t many sources to mention but the T-shirt came from ebay.  Search for Star Trek red shirt and you’ll see you have a ton of choices.  The one I got was simply the cheapest.  I should also mention that I bought the prop toys at BigBadToyStore.com.  I like BBTS for the most part and had rather buy from them than most of the bigger toy retailers.  They often run great sales but some of their merch is overpriced.  Caveat emptor.

Just remember – n ext time someone asks you to go somewhere you’ve never been and you happen to be wearing a red shirt, think twice before accepting.  I’m just saying.
